Food That You Can Grow In Containers

Growing your food in containers is a great way to save space, create portability for low light conditions, and to help control pests and soil conditions. There are tons of different options for you to choose from- so you’re sure to save some money at the grocery store as well! Here are some of my top picks for fruits and veggies that you can grow in a container!

To maximize space and production- think about trying out some companion planting! By having a basic understanding of how things grow, and brainstorming a layout you can grow more food in less space.

If you choose to buy seeds- make sure to take notice of the growing requirements on the back of the package. This will tell you when to plant and harvest, sun and water requirements, and soil depth needs for the specific variety you are growing!

Strawberries: One of the most rewarding things for me to grow are strawberries! They taste so great when they are fresh picked. You can plant these in pots or hanging containers. They will survive in containers from 10-12 inches in diameter and 8 inches deep. Everbearing strawberry varieties are most commonly used in containers.

This is my favorite strawberry containers to use! You can place them in a stand to keep them up off the ground from predators. Furthermore, I think it makes harvesting them a more fun.

Lettuce/Salad Mixture: A great way to get your greens into your diet is to always have them available! Consider planting a salad garden. This could include things like arugula, spinach, loose leaf lettuce, and head lettuce. Getting a variety pack of seeds like these is a great way to make sure you don’t get bored with your salads! Use the succession planting method to maximize how long you get to enjoy harvests!

Tomatoes: With the right size pot, consistent watering, and the correct amount of light- you can enjoy growing your own tomatoes in a small space! They taste so much better when you grow them yourself, trust me. Some great varieties to consider are Sungold Cherry tomatoes, or go with a larger variety like Brandywine.

Zucchini: Growing zucchini in a pot is a breeze! They like space so make sure to keep them one to a five gallon size pot. The more space you provide the better, but they do have fairly shallow roots so a pot about 12 inches deep will do. Make sure to place it somewhere that gets 6-8 hours of full sun a day!

Peppers: You can grow a vast majority of peppers in containers such as bell peppers, Jalapenos, Poblano, and Cayenne! These look beautiful and taste delicious! A win- win! Take note of the growing requirements for whatever kind you chose.

Blueberries: Did you know you could grow your own blueberries in as small of a space as a five gallon bucket? They are partially self-fertile- so you will benefit from planting two or more varieties next to each other. A great variety to consider is Sunshine Blue Blueberry!

Potatoes: A staple survival crop that you can grow in pretty much any type of container… I’ve seen people use laundry baskets, reusable grocery bags.

My favorite way to grow potatoes is by these nifty growing bags that make harvesting a breeze! You just layer your soil, potato seed, and mulch- then harvest once the foliage starts to die back. I think this is a great option for anyone who is limited on space.

Herbs (basil, oregano, parsley, etc.) : A great way to bring your cooking game to the next level- is by growing and harvesting your own herbs and spices! Pretty much any kitchen herb you would like to use can be grown in pots! If you have a nice windowsill in your kitchen- you could grow an herb garden filled with your favorites for quick and easy pickin! You can also use them as companion plants for your veggies outside!

Raspberries: These tangy little treats are the perfect mid summer snack! You can use them alone, or toss them in some delicious smoothies. There are bush type raspberries that are made specifically for pots, and come with all the information you need to grow them successfully!

Citrus Trees (dwarf varieties) : Grow bags and large flower pots will make great containers for something like a lemon tree! They require full sun- so just make sure wherever you decide to face them they can get at least 6-8 hours of direct sun. Make sure to add some compost to your soil medium so it can get all the nutrients it needs to thrive!

So what are you waiting for?

Planting food in containers is a simple and beneficial way to maximize growing space and reduce pest issues. It doesn’t matter if you have a farm, or an apartment balcony- growing your own produce has never been easier!
